The pending sale of 1521 Queen St. West has fallen through. The prospective buyer was rejected by Mr. Habibi for reasons unknown and control returned to Patsy and Sharma – the previous owners who we’ve been fighting against.
The group is hopeful that they will try to sell the property quickly.
John has proposed a petition to Mayor Ford outlining the community’s concerns and asking for direct oversight to see that the building is not allowed to be used for unsavoury purposes, that all repairs are done and that the management of the building complies with all applicable laws and bylaws.
The petition is available at Poor John’s cafe (1610 Queen St. West).
Please take some time to drop by and sign it.
A copy of the letter was sent out on the WPN distribution list. If you’d like to get a copy, please contact me through this site.
The fight is not over yet.
Thanks to Clair C. for posting this to the email list.
The Gleaner has posted an article about the issues in our little corner of Parkdale.
The article is interesting in that it presents both sides of the argument, ours and the bar owners that this group opposes. We may sometimes lose sight of the other side of the story.
I wonder if there’s a way cooperatively solve this issue to everyone’s satisfaction…
thoughts?
Sounds like things might heat up again at 1521 Queen St West.
A deal to sell the building is in the works, and despite some initial good news from the prospective new owner, things have taken a turn. It turns out that rather than offices and maybe some apartments on the second floor, the new owner plans to open a hotel.
We all know what that means.
John will be doing a tour of the building tomorrow (March 31) at 10:00 AM. If anyone is interested, please contact John directly, or reach our on the email list.
We’ve had some great success so far. Let’s not lose sight of that. We may need to redouble our efforts to make sure one slumlord doesn’t not replace another.
The future of this little part of Parkdale depends to a large extent on what happens with that building.
We must make sure our voice is heard.
